The city's figures stop at the city system

The sewer utility's 25 to 31 grain setting and the DNR's March 2026 samples were written for, and drawn from, the City of West Bend's system. A private well is a source of its own, and nothing the City publishes speaks for it.

Wisconsin's January 2026 estimate counts 32,524 people in the city and roughly 11,800 more in the Towns of West Bend, Trenton and Barton. Many of those town households have a West Bend mailing address and a well of their own.

What to have ready when you call

Say it is a well, tell us how many people share your water, and describe where the supply line comes in and whether an old softener sits there. Any lab report for the well helps; read us the hardness line and we size from it.

No report is fine. The water gets a hardness test before anything is touched, and your tap gets another afterward until it reads zero.

What a softener will not do for a well

A softener trades calcium and magnesium, the hardness minerals, for sodium, or for potassium when the brine tank is filled with potassium chloride. Bacteria and nitrate fall outside its design.

For well owners, the Wisconsin DNR advises a lab test for bacteria once a year at the least. That test is separate from any softener, and it is not something we sell.

Iron on the lab report

A private well may carry iron besides hardness. If your report lists an iron figure, read it to us along with the rest.

Common questions

My mailing address says West Bend. Do the city's numbers apply to my well?

No. They describe the City of West Bend's water system. A well in the Town of West Bend, Trenton or Barton has its own hardness, measured from its own water.

Do I need a lab test before I call?

It helps, but it is not required. Bring whatever results you have; either way the water is tested before the work and your tap is retested afterward.

Will a softener take care of bacteria in my well?

No. Bacteria and nitrate fall outside a softener's design. The DNR's advice for a private well is a yearly bacteria test, at minimum.
